Quick answer: If your furnace is running but blowing cold air, check that the thermostat fan is set to Auto, the system is on Heat, and the filter isn't clogged. The most common furnace causes are a dirty flame sensor, a failed igniter, overheating from poor airflow, gas supply problems, or blocked vent pipes on high-efficiency models. Try one reset; if it locks out again, call a technician.

There's nothing more frustrating on a cold New Jersey morning than hearing the furnace kick on and feeling chilly air from the vents. The good news is that many causes are simple, and a few quick checks can tell you whether it's a two-minute fix or time to call a pro.

Safety first: if you smell gas (rotten eggs), leave the house and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. If your carbon monoxide alarm sounds, get out and call 911. See our carbon monoxide safety guide.

1. Thermostat fan set to "On"

If the fan is set to On, the blower runs constantly, even between heating cycles, pushing room-temperature air that feels cold. Set the fan to Auto so it only runs when the burners are heating. Also confirm the thermostat is set to Heat and above room temperature.

2. The furnace hasn't warmed up yet

Most furnaces run the burners for 30–60 seconds before the blower starts, so the first air is cool. If warm air arrives within a minute or two, that's normal.

3. Dirty flame sensor

The flame sensor proves the burners are lit. When it's coated with residue, the furnace thinks there's no flame and shuts the gas off after a few seconds, while the blower may keep running. Signs: burners light briefly, shut off, and retry several times before locking out. Cleaning the sensor is a common, quick repair and part of every heating tune-up.

4. Failed igniter or ignition control

Modern furnaces use a hot surface igniter or spark igniter. If it's cracked or the control board isn't firing it, the burners never light. You may hear clicking without ignition.

5. Clogged air filter (overheating)

A badly clogged filter starves the furnace of airflow, the heat exchanger overheats, and a limit switch shuts the burners off as a safety measure, while the blower keeps running to cool it down. Replace the filter; see our air filter guide.

6. Gas supply problems

Check that the gas valve to the furnace is on (handle parallel to the pipe) and that other gas appliances work. If none do, contact your gas utility.

7. Blocked vent pipes or condensate trap (high-efficiency furnaces)

High-efficiency furnaces vent through white PVC pipes on the side of the house. Snow, ice, leaves or nests can block them, and a pressure switch stops the burners. These furnaces also produce condensate; a clogged trap or drain line can cause shutdowns. Clear snow from the pipes after storms.

8. Leaky or disconnected ductwork

If warm air is escaping into an attic, crawl space or garage through leaky or disconnected ducts, rooms get only lukewarm air. You may notice some rooms colder than others.

Heat pump owners: what's normal

Heat pumps deliver air that's warm but not hot, often cooler than you'd expect from a furnace. In cold, damp weather they also run defrost cycles, which can briefly blow cooler air and produce steam outside. Call for service if the house won't warm up, ice stays on the outdoor coil, or auxiliary heat runs all the time. Learn more in emergency heat vs. auxiliary heat.

Quick troubleshooting checklist

Check What to do
Thermostat Heat mode, fan on Auto, set above room temperature, fresh batteries
Filter Replace if dirty
Furnace switch and breaker Make sure power is on
Furnace door Firmly closed (safety switch)
Gas valve On
PVC vent pipes outside Clear of snow and debris
Status light Note the blink code for the technician

Then try one reset. If it locks out again, call for furnace and heating repair. More steps are in our furnace troubleshooting checklist.

Prevent the next cold-air morning

Dirty flame sensors, weak igniters and clogged filters are exactly what a fall tune-up catches. Our $89 heating tune-up and the Prime Comfort Club ($19/month for a heating and an AC tune-up each year, priority scheduling and 10% off repairs) keep your furnace ready.

Is it the furnace or the ductwork?

If warm air comes out of some vents but others feel cool, the furnace may be fine and the ductwork is the problem. Clues:

  • Rooms at the end of long duct runs are always cooler.
  • Vents in rooms over garages or crawl spaces feel cool.
  • You can feel warm air leaking from duct joints in the basement or attic.
  • A duct has come loose in the attic or crawl space (common after other work in the house).

Sealing leaky joints, reconnecting loose sections, insulating ducts in unconditioned spaces and balancing dampers can make a dramatic difference. A technician can measure temperature and airflow at different vents to pinpoint where heat is being lost.

What a heating repair visit includes

When you call us for a furnace blowing cold air, a typical diagnostic includes checking the thermostat and wiring, inspecting the filter and airflow, reading the furnace's fault codes, testing the igniter and flame sensor, checking gas pressure, inspecting the venting and condensate system on high-efficiency units, and confirming safety switches work. Then we explain what we found and give you an upfront price before any work begins. New customers get $50 off their first repair.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my furnace running but blowing cold air?

Common causes include the thermostat fan set to On, a dirty flame sensor shutting off the burners, a failed igniter, a clogged filter causing an overheating shutdown, gas supply problems, or a blocked vent or condensate line on high-efficiency furnaces.

How do I know if my flame sensor is bad?

A classic sign is burners that light for a few seconds and then shut off, repeating several times before the furnace locks out. The sensor often just needs cleaning, which a technician can do safely during a service call or tune-up.

Can a dirty filter make my furnace blow cold air?

Yes. A clogged filter restricts airflow, the furnace overheats, and a safety limit switch shuts the burners off while the blower keeps running, blowing cool air.

Why does my heat pump blow cold air in winter?

Heat pump air is warm but not hot, and during defrost cycles it may briefly feel cool. If the house won't warm up, the outdoor unit is iced over, or auxiliary heat runs constantly, call for service.

Should I reset my furnace if it blows cold air?

One reset is fine: turn off power for 30 seconds, then restore it. If the furnace locks out again, stop resetting it and call a technician, since repeated resets can hide a safety problem.

Yes. Prime Comfort Group offers same day heating repair and 24/7 emergency service across Ocean, Monmouth and Burlington counties. Message us on WhatsApp or call (732) 779-7106.
