Replacing your air conditioner, furnace or heat pump is a big investment, and for most homeowners it happens only a few times in a lifetime. Knowing what a quality installation looks like, from the first visit to the final inspection, helps you compare quotes, avoid surprises and make sure you get the performance you're paying for.

Here's the process we follow, step by step.

Step 1: The in-home assessment

A real quote starts at your home, not over the phone. During the assessment we:

  • Talk about your comfort: rooms that are too hot or cold, humidity, noise, allergies, energy bills, and how long you plan to stay in the house.
  • Inspect the existing equipment: age, condition, refrigerant type, venting, electrical and location.
  • Look at the ductwork: size, condition, leaks, insulation and return air.
  • Evaluate the home: square footage, insulation, windows, layout and orientation, all inputs for proper sizing. Read why in our sizing guide.

If your current system might still be worth repairing, we'll tell you that too. See our repair-or-replace guide.

Step 2: Options and a written, upfront quote

We'll explain your options in plain language, typically with good, better and best choices that differ in efficiency, comfort features and price. Each quote should spell out:

  • Equipment make, model and efficiency ratings (SEER2, HSPF2, AFUE)
  • What's included: removal of old equipment, line set, pad or platform, thermostat, ductwork changes, electrical work, condensate drain and venting
  • Permits and inspections
  • Warranty information for equipment and labor
  • Total price, with no hidden fees

Ask about current savings: we offer $500 off a new heating or cooling system, and utility or NJ Clean Energy Program incentives may apply to qualifying equipment.

Step 3: Scheduling and permits

Once you approve the quote, we schedule installation, often for the next day, depending on equipment availability and permits.

In New Jersey, replacing heating and cooling equipment typically requires a permit from your town's construction office under the Uniform Construction Code, and the completed work is inspected. We handle the permit paperwork. Properties in flood zones may have additional requirements for equipment elevation. See HVAC after flooding.

Step 4: Preparing your home

To make installation day smooth:

  • Clear a path to the furnace or air handler, the outdoor unit and the electrical panel.
  • Move vehicles if the driveway is needed for access.
  • Secure pets away from work areas.
  • Let us know about any access codes, parking rules or HOA requirements.

We protect floors and work areas, and we clean up when we're done.

Step 5: Installation day

A typical replacement in the same location goes like this:

  1. Safely shut off power and gas to the old equipment.
  2. Recover refrigerant from the old system as required by EPA rules.
  3. Remove the old equipment and haul it away.
  4. Set the new equipment: indoor unit (furnace, air handler or coil) and outdoor unit on a level pad, wall bracket or elevated platform.
  5. Connect refrigerant lines, brazing joints with nitrogen flowing through the lines to prevent internal scale. Depending on the situation, the existing line set may be reused after evaluation or replaced.
  6. Connect electrical, gas, venting and condensate drain to code.
  7. Make ductwork connections and seal them.
  8. Install or connect the thermostat.

Most straightforward replacements are completed in one day.

Step 6: Start-up and commissioning

This is the step that separates a quality installation from a simple box swap:

  • Pressure test the refrigerant lines to check for leaks.
  • Evacuate the system with a vacuum pump to remove air and moisture, verified with a micron gauge.
  • Charge refrigerant correctly based on manufacturer specifications, verified by superheat or subcooling measurements.
  • Check airflow and set blower speeds appropriately.
  • For furnaces: check gas pressure, combustion, venting and safety controls.
  • Test operation in heating and cooling modes, and test safety devices.

A system that's undercharged, overcharged or moving the wrong amount of air won't deliver its rated efficiency or comfort, no matter how good the equipment is.

Step 7: Walkthrough

Before we leave, we'll show you:

  • How to use your thermostat and any smart features
  • Where the filter is, what size it is and how often to change it
  • What normal operation looks and sounds like (for example, heat pump defrost cycles)
  • Your warranty information and how to register equipment if needed

Step 8: Inspection and follow-up

Your town's inspector checks the work as required by the permit. We coordinate the inspection. And because our own licensed team does the work, not subcontractors, if anything isn't right afterward, you call the same team that installed it.

Questions to ask before you sign

  • Is this price final, including permits, removal and any ductwork changes?
  • Will my existing line set be reused or replaced, and why?
  • What thermostat is included, and is it compatible with this equipment?
  • How long will installation take, and will I have heat or cooling overnight?
  • What warranties come with the equipment and the labor, and what keeps them valid?
  • Who will do the work, and who do I call if something isn't right?

A contractor who answers these clearly and in writing is one you can trust with your home.

Keeping your new system in top shape

New equipment still needs annual maintenance to perform well and protect warranties. The Prime Comfort Club ($19/month) includes a heating and an AC tune-up every year, priority scheduling and 10% off repairs. See our seasonal maintenance checklist.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to install a new AC or furnace?

Most straightforward replacements of an AC, furnace or heat pump in the same location take about one day. Full system replacements, ductwork changes, new equipment locations or difficult access can extend the job.

Do I need a permit to replace my AC or furnace in New Jersey?

In New Jersey, replacing HVAC equipment typically requires a permit from your municipality's construction office under the Uniform Construction Code, followed by an inspection. Your contractor should handle the permit.

Do I need to be home during installation?

Someone should be home at the start to give access and confirm the plan, and at the end for the walkthrough on how to use the new system. In between, you don't need to stay, as long as the installers can access the equipment and electrical panel.

How fast can a new system be installed?

Prime Comfort Group offers next day installs in many cases once you approve your quote, depending on equipment availability and permit requirements.

How long does a new HVAC system last?

Many central air conditioners last about 12–17 years and many furnaces 15–20 years with regular maintenance. Units near the ocean often wear faster due to salt air, so annual tune-ups matter.
