Quick answer: An AC freezes when the indoor coil gets too cold, usually because not enough warm air is flowing across it (dirty filter, closed vents, failing blower, dirty coil) or because refrigerant is low from a leak. Turn cooling off, run the fan to thaw it, replace the filter and wait until all ice melts. If it freezes again, call a technician; low refrigerant always means a leak that needs repair.

It's a hot July afternoon, the house is warm, and when you check the air conditioner you find ice: on the copper line going into the outdoor unit, on the indoor coil, or even frost on the outside of the air handler. It seems backwards, since ice usually means cold, but a frozen AC is a sign that something is wrong, and running it that way can turn a simple fix into a costly repair.

Why an air conditioner freezes

Your AC cools by running very cold refrigerant through the indoor (evaporator) coil while the blower pushes warm house air across it. That warm air keeps the coil just above freezing. When too little warm air reaches the coil, or refrigerant pressure drops, the coil falls below 32°F and the moisture it pulls from the air turns to ice. The ice blocks even more airflow, and the problem snowballs.

The most common causes

1. Dirty or clogged air filter

The number one cause we see. A clogged filter starves the coil of airflow. During humid shore summers with heavy run time, filters load up fast. See our air filter guide.

2. Closed or blocked vents and returns

Closing too many supply vents or blocking return grilles with furniture reduces airflow across the coil.

3. Dirty evaporator coil

Dust and grime on the indoor coil act like insulation and restrict airflow. This builds up when filters are skipped or the wrong size is used.

4. Failing blower motor or capacitor

If the indoor fan runs slowly, or not at all, the coil freezes quickly. A worn blower motor, bad capacitor or failing control board can be the culprit.

5. Low refrigerant (a leak)

Low charge drops coil pressure and temperature. AC systems are sealed, so low refrigerant always means a leak. Near the coast, salt corrosion is a common cause; see salt air and AC corrosion.

6. Running the AC when it's cool outside

Running the air conditioner on cool nights (roughly below 60°F outdoors) can cause freezing because the system can't build normal pressures.

7. Collapsed or leaky ducts

A crushed return duct or disconnected section can choke airflow to the system.

What to do right now

  1. Turn the thermostat to Off (cooling off) and set the fan to On. Moving air helps the coil thaw.
  2. Replace the air filter.
  3. Open all supply vents and clear return grilles.
  4. Wait for the ice to melt completely. This can take several hours. Put towels down; melting ice produces a lot of water, and the drain pan can overflow.
  5. Restart cooling and watch. Feel the air at the vents and check the lines after 30–60 minutes.

Don't:

  • Chip, scrape or pour hot water on the ice. You can damage the coil or fins.
  • Keep running cooling while it's frozen. Liquid refrigerant can reach the compressor and damage it.

When to call a technician

Call for AC repair if:

  • It refreezes after a new filter and full thaw.
  • The indoor fan isn't running or seems weak.
  • You hear hissing or see oily residue on the refrigerant lines (possible leak).
  • Water is overflowing the drain pan.
  • The outdoor unit hums but the fan doesn't spin.

A technician will check airflow, blower speed, coil condition, refrigerant pressures and temperatures, and look for leaks. Refrigerant work requires EPA Section 608 certification.

How to prevent your AC from freezing again

Prevention step How often
Check / change the filter Monthly in summer
Keep vents open and returns clear Always
Professional tune-up (coil, charge, blower) Every spring
Rinse the outdoor coil (power off) Every few weeks near the shore
Avoid cooling on cool nights As needed

A spring tune-up catches low charge, weak capacitors and dirty coils before they cause freezing. Our $89 tune-up and the Prime Comfort Club ($19/month) make it easy. For more troubleshooting, read AC running but not cooling.

Frozen AC at the Jersey Shore: what's different

Homes near the ocean and bay deal with two extra factors. First, heavy humidity means the indoor coil handles more moisture, so any airflow restriction turns into ice faster. Second, salt corrosion on outdoor coils and refrigerant connections is a common source of slow refrigerant leaks, which lower coil pressure and cause freezing. If your frozen AC is on an oceanfront or lagoon-front home, ask the technician to check the outdoor coil and fittings for corrosion, not just top off the charge.

Why you shouldn't just add refrigerant

It's tempting to ask for a quick "top-off" and move on. But air conditioners are sealed systems; refrigerant doesn't get used up. If it's low, it's leaking. Adding refrigerant without finding and fixing the leak:

  • Wastes money, since the charge will leak out again
  • Releases refrigerant into the environment
  • Leaves the root cause (often a corroded coil or loose fitting) to get worse
  • Can still lead to compressor damage

A proper repair finds the leak, repairs or replaces the leaking component, evacuates the system and recharges it to the manufacturer's specification. If the system uses phased-out R-22 or the coil is badly corroded, it may be time to compare repair against replacement. See our repair-or-replace guide.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there ice on my AC lines?

Ice forms when the indoor coil gets too cold, usually because airflow is restricted (dirty filter, blocked vents, failing blower or dirty coil) or because the system is low on refrigerant from a leak.

How do I unfreeze my air conditioner?

Set the thermostat to Off and the fan to On so air moves over the coil, replace the filter, and wait until all ice has melted, which often takes several hours. Then try cooling again. Never chip or scrape ice off the coil.

Can a dirty filter cause my AC to freeze?

Yes. A clogged filter is one of the most common causes. It reduces airflow across the indoor coil so the coil gets too cold and moisture freezes on it.

Is it bad to run a frozen AC?

Yes. Running a frozen system cools poorly and can send liquid refrigerant back to the compressor, risking expensive damage. Turn cooling off until it thaws and the cause is fixed.

Can low refrigerant make an AC freeze?

Yes. Low refrigerant lowers coil pressure and temperature, causing ice. Since AC systems are sealed, low refrigerant means there is a leak that needs to be found and repaired by an EPA-certified technician.
