9 Signs You Need a New Furnace (and When Repair Still Makes Sense)

Quick answer: It's time to consider a new furnace when it's around 15 years old or more and needs frequent or expensive repairs, heating bills keep rising, rooms heat unevenly, the burner flame is yellow, it makes banging or grinding noises, or a technician finds a cracked heat exchanger, a safety concern that usually means replacement. Minor repairs on a younger, well-maintained furnace are often still worth it.

Furnaces rarely fail without warning. In the months, or even years, before a furnace gives out, it usually shows signs: higher bills, more repairs, odd noises or rooms that never get warm. Recognizing them lets you replace on your schedule instead of during a January cold snap. Here are nine signs to watch for.

1. Your furnace is 15 years old or more

Many gas furnaces last around 15–20 years. Age alone isn't a reason to replace a furnace that runs safely and reliably, but it's a reason to start planning. Find the age on the data plate's serial number, or ask us to decode it. See how long HVAC systems last.

2. Repairs are becoming frequent or expensive

One repair in several years is normal. Calls every winter, or a big-ticket repair like a control board, inducer motor or blower motor on an older unit, suggest the furnace is near the end. A useful rule: if a repair costs a large share of a new system and the furnace is past mid-life, replacement usually makes more sense.

3. Heating bills keep rising

Furnaces lose efficiency as they age, especially without maintenance. Older furnaces may also be far less efficient than today's high-efficiency models (90%+ AFUE). If bills climb year after year with the same habits, the furnace may be working harder to deliver the same heat. See our efficiency ratings guide.

4. Uneven heating and cold rooms

Some rooms too warm, others too cold? It can be ductwork or airflow, but it can also be a furnace that can no longer deliver enough heat. A proper assessment separates duct problems from equipment problems. See why is my upstairs so hot (or cold).

5. Yellow or flickering burner flame

A healthy natural gas flame is mostly blue. Yellow, orange or flickering flames can indicate incomplete combustion, which can increase carbon monoxide production. Have it inspected promptly.

6. Cracked heat exchanger

The heat exchanger keeps combustion gases separate from the air you breathe. Over years of heating and cooling, metal can crack. A cracked heat exchanger is a serious safety concern, and in most cases replacing the furnace is the recommended fix. Read our carbon monoxide safety guide.

7. Loud or unusual noises

Banging at start-up (delayed ignition), rumbling after shutdown, squealing motors and grinding bearings point to worn components. See what HVAC noises mean.

8. Short cycling

A furnace that turns on and off every few minutes can be overheating, have a failing flame sensor, or be oversized. Persistent short cycling wears out parts. See short cycling explained.

9. Dust, dryness and poor air quality

Older systems with worn blowers, leaky ducts or poor filtration can leave the home dusty and dry in winter. Our indoor air quality service looks at filtration, humidity and ductwork together.

When repair still makes sense

  • The furnace is under about 10–12 years old.
  • The problem is a common part: flame sensor, igniter, filter, thermostat, pressure switch.
  • It's been maintained and runs safely.
  • The heat exchanger is in good condition.

A heating repair visit will tell you which category you're in, and we'll give you upfront pricing for both options when replacement is worth considering.

Your replacement options

  1. High-efficiency gas furnace (often 90%+ AFUE), paired with your existing or a new AC.
  2. Cold-climate heat pump, for efficient heating and cooling in one system.
  3. Dual fuel: a heat pump plus a gas furnace for the coldest days.

What to expect when replacing a furnace

  1. Assessment: we look at your current furnace, venting, gas line, ductwork and home, and talk about your comfort goals.
  2. Options and quote: furnace, heat pump or dual-fuel options with efficiency ratings and an itemized, upfront price.
  3. Permit: New Jersey typically requires a permit for furnace replacement; we handle it.
  4. Installation day: most straightforward furnace replacements are completed in a day, including removing the old unit, setting the new one, connecting gas, venting, electrical and ductwork, and installing or updating the thermostat.
  5. Start-up and safety testing: gas pressure, combustion, venting and safety controls are checked before we leave.
  6. Walkthrough: filter location and size, thermostat use and what normal operation looks and sounds like.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my furnace needs to be replaced?

Key signs include age over about 15 years, frequent or expensive repairs, rising heating bills, uneven heating, a yellow or flickering burner flame, loud banging or rumbling, and safety issues such as a cracked heat exchanger.

Is a cracked heat exchanger dangerous?

It can be. A crack can allow combustion gases, including carbon monoxide, to mix with household air. Most technicians recommend replacing the furnace rather than repairing a cracked heat exchanger.

What does a yellow furnace flame mean?

A healthy gas flame is mostly blue. A yellow or flickering flame can indicate incomplete combustion from dirty burners or other problems, which can increase carbon monoxide production. Have it inspected.

Should I repair or replace a 15-year-old furnace?

If the repair is minor, like an igniter or flame sensor, repair often makes sense. If the repair is major, safety is a concern, or repairs are frequent, replacement is usually the better value.

Should I replace my furnace with a heat pump?

It depends on your fuel, home and goals. A heat pump adds efficient cooling and heating; a high-efficiency furnace delivers strong heat on the coldest nights; dual fuel combines both. We explain the options honestly.

Do you offer savings on a new furnace?

Yes. Prime Comfort Group offers $500 off a new heating or cooling system (terms apply; offers cannot be combined) and can point you to current utility and NJ Clean Energy Program incentives.
